If you are a non-Spanish speaker going to Spain for the first time, what words would you be sure to learn while you’re there?
If you’re my husband, that’s an easy question: You learn postre (dessert), torta de queso (cheesecake), jarra de sangria (pitcher of sangria), vino tinto (red wine), and menú del día (menu of the day, a typical three-course lunch on the Costa Blanca). He already knew how to say hello, please, thank you, beer and “one more” before we went. That handful of words is more than enough to thoroughly enjoy two weeks in Spain.
Dave and I went to Spain as Workawayers, but we didn’t feel like we did a whole lot of work while we were there. We worked for a fabulous British couple named Sharon and Jason, who a year earlier bought a house with two orange orchards and an annex they’re converting to a guesthouse. Dave and I spent most of our days in the orchard, picking oranges, juicing oranges and weeding, getting suntans and enjoying the dry air after our winter in the UK. Some days we worked in the annex, painting and sanding and helping to lay a concrete floor. In the evenings, Dave, Sharon, Jason and I sat at our outdoor dining table, eating delicious meals cooked by Jason and drinking liters of wine while talking about our respective adventures of Workawaying and traveling the globe. On our two days off each week, Dave and I enjoyed perfect weather at stunning, nearly deserted beaches. After spending October through February slogging through mud in England, pre-tourist season southern Spain was exactly what we needed.
It was a perfect two weeks. We hope to see Spain and Sharon and Jason again very soon!
